About

In their Curriculum Guide (MAA, 2004), the Mathematical Association of America’s Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics (CUPM) recommends that mathematics programs “guide students to learn mathematics in a way that helps them to better understand its place in society: its meaning, its history, and its uses” in order “to serve all students well – not only those who major in the mathematical or physical sciences.”  Teaching history in the context of standard lower division courses, like Calculus 3, will help other majors also see history despite the fact that these students are unlikely to take a course in the history of mathematics.  Generation and organization of materials is provided to facilitate the inclusion of history in context.

  • Co-Pi Sarah J. Greenwald is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and a Women's Studies core faculty member at Appalachian State University. She received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. Her scholarship areas include Riemannian geometry, popular culture as it pertains to mathematics, and women and minorities in mathematics, and she is a 2005 Mathematical Association of America Alder Award winner for distinguished teaching. She is a member of the executive committee of the Association for Women in Mathematics and the editorial board of PRIMUS. She co-created the educational website SimpsonsMath.com with Andrew Nestler. While it is not affiliated with the show, the site was mentioned in the audio commentary of the 7th season of The Simpsons. Her interactive mathematics lecture appears as a 25-minute DVD extra for the 20th Century Fox Futurama movie Bender's Big Score and is listed as "Mind-bending." Dr. Greenwald has spoken about the impacts of scientific popular culture representations on NPR's Science Friday and all over the country.
  • Co-Pi Greg Rhoads is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Appalachian State University. He received his PhD from Purdue University.  He co-developed (with Sloan Despeaux from Western Carolina) an online course in the history of mathematics for undergraduates as part of the LearnNC project.
  • Website Designer Jeff Tickle is a Operations and Systems Analyst for Electronic Student Services at Appalachian.  He was a computer science undergraduate student when he worked on an earlier version of the website via the phpWebSite Content Management System.
  • Website Designer Brent Woodruff is a Support Specialist for Information Technology Services at Appalachian. His contribution to this project includes the software design of both the original phpWebsite and newer Plone versions of this website. Brent continues to maintain the current site.
